The Weighted Mile

I enjoy walking the mile to and from work. This poem reflects this.

Ninefold Evolution

The Walk begins
in the comfort of home
bags strapped on
like saddlebags on a mule
Fifteen pounds strapped
tying knots in the shoulders
Seventy-five pounds of fat
slowing movement forward
The door opens and
the world outdoors
floods in through the nostrils
step begets step
as my path zigs and zigs
through the early morning
as the dawn tips the Lake
I walk and breathe
thoughts drifting wide
Ideas coalescing
Words finding meaning
Somewhere a chipmunk chirps
and seagulls scurry
The road and I are one.
Until I make my way
to the beautiful downtown
of my home of four decades
where I exchange one weight
and one distance
for another weight
and eight painful hours.
