I posted this yesterday on Facebook and decided I wanted to reach a broader audience by posting on the blog.
As of today at least 167 injuries occurred during Sunday night’s protest against the Dakota Access Pipeline. Police fired on the crowd with “non-lethal” projectiles that included massive rubber bullets and tear gas canisters. In addition the group was sprayed with high pressure hoses when hypothermia was already a risk for protectors engaged in this war of attrition.
Among the injuries was Sophia Walinsky who will have her arm amputated today in a Minneapolis hospital. A gas canister blew up against her arm tearing it wide open. Graphic images may be found elsewhere on the web. A 13 year-old girl was struck in the head by a rubber bullet. At least two elders went into cardiac arrest.
In the meantime Facebook is full of irrational fears of Trump’s victory for president and how this issues in an era of a new Nazi regime. Wake up! The Dakota Access Pipeline occurred on Obama’s watch. The best he did was a lame duck veto of the Keystone XL pipeline. Wounded Knee, which occurred in 1973, was presided over by President Nixon. It doesn’t matter which side of the partisan fence you stand on, if you are a part of the American government it seems you stand against our indigenous natives when it actually matters.
Suddenly riots and marches are going on about Trump not being “my president.” Where are the marches for Standing Rock? Why hasn’t president-elect Trump stated he would pull the police and the pipeline out of there? You’re all distracted by the red herrings they toss in front of you and people are being hurt, killed, and frozen to death. You make hashtags stating your support but if you were called to go out and literally stand with everyone else who had the courage to leave the comfort of their homes to stand with them would you?!? Go ahead and post your hashtags, selfies, and complain about Trump metaphorically grabbing your privates by winning the presidency. You are part of the problem.
Think about how things would change if that 13 year old girl was your daughter or if Sophia Walinsky was your sister.
