Gaslit Friendship

I remember when we first met
The stories you told
about an absentee father
with a fantastic life
that sounded all too good to be true
Thus I called your bluff
and you stood your ground
and only later recanted
When the tides of time passed
I asked again about the lie
and the story had changed
“It was a joke and I told you then!
I had spent all these years thinking you knew.”
I did not know.
As the story had changed.
And my faulty brain
was what took the blame.

In all the years since
the game played out the same
The confirmation I seek
The story you relate
The blame laid
and the questioning
of my own sanity
And here I am
approaching the age of 40
only now realizing
the damage that has been done
Even still I sit here
wanting to keep the friendship
that took so many years to build.
