My Dark Follower

shadow-people

This poem was originally written on January 5, 2015 while in outpatient therapy. It describes my emotional pain, anger, and depression in a very raw format. Thus rhythm, meter, and rhyme are purposely out of sync.

It follows swiftly on my heels
Dark tendrils grasping for my pain
Light absent from its shapless form
The bitter end of deepened scars

It held the wounds of angry strife
Somber nurturing outside Soul
Fed the Serpent poisoning me
Rooted beneath my Holy Tree

Time has come for Cycle to end
Death to Life built around Sin
My staff raised, the Shadow recoils
Sol and Luna combined as One

I turn my gaze towards the Light
Divinity within is found
No thought occurs to me to mourn
Sacred lotus blossoms but once

I cast my arms into the Fire
The Shadow plunged into the blaze
At last the pain soothed by Water
Let it go — My dark follower.

  1. Dark tendrils. I’ve seen them also in myself.
